Section A: The UAE – need to know

The UAE is composed of 7 emirates:

Nationality: All UAE citizens in the seven emirates carry the unified race of the UAE, which is recognized internationally. The demonym is Emirati.

The official language of the UAE is Arabic. Positioned as a global commercial hub and top tourist destination, English is widely spoken. All road and traffic signs and signs on retail outlets are in Arabic and English.

General Type of Nurses in UAE

HAAD/DOH, DHA, MOHAP Registered Nurse – considered as General Nurse/ Staff Nurse. The following but not limited are the Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform routine procedures (blood pressure measurements, administering injections, etc.) and fill in patients' charts

  • Monitor patient's condition and assess their needs to provide the best possible care and advice

  • Observe and interpret patient's symptoms and communicate them to physicians

  • Collaborate with physicians and nurses to devise individualized care plans for patients

  • Adjust and administer patient's medication and provide treatments according to physician's orders

  • Inspect the facilities and act to maintain excellent hygiene and safety (decontaminating equipment, sanitizing surfaces, preparing beds, etc.)

  • Provide instant medical care in emergencies

Critical Care Nurse/ ICU Nurse  – a Registered Nurse who provides care to acutely and critically ill patients in a highly technical and ongoing monitoring environment. These patients are facing life-threatening problems with varying needs, which require extensive medication protocols and therapies.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • An ICU nurse is responsible for closely observing patients, noting specific procedures and prescribed medication for each case; assisting doctors in providing physical assessments and administering treatments; monitoring vital signs, and ensuring the proper functions of feeding tubes, ventilators, catheters, and other life support equipment; 

  • They attend to the patient's overall needs, such as feeding, bathing and grooming, dressing replacement, medication intake, and comfort. 

  • An ICU nurse works efficiently with other practical nurses and nursing assistants in the ICU ward and can provide clear directions and guidance for procedures and routines. 

  • The nurse should also provide support and education to the patient's family, answer questions, and give vital instructions on how to care for the patient.

  • An ICU must be able to handle critical and highly stressful situations with efficiency and composure. They must react decisively and intelligently in emergencies, perform and assist in medical procedures with accuracy, expertly operate life support machines and other medical types of equipment, and carefully look after patients with severe medical conditions.

Pediatric Nurse – A registered  Pediatric Nurse provides health and medical care for infants, children, and adolescents. The Pediatric Nurse can talk to children and ask questions about their health, especially when children are scared and cannot communicate their problems.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assessing a child's needs and providing initial care.

  • Identifies changes in a child's signs and symptoms and intervenes in emergencies

  • Participates in activities to manage a child's pain levels

  • Serves as a child advocate

  • Administers medication using age-appropriate guidelines

  • Involves the child and family in the care plan and determines the child's needs based on a careful analysis of symptoms concerning their growth and development

  • Explains to parents and families how to take care of their children and protect their health,  advising them on how to design their home for conditions such as paralysis and juvenile diabetes

Mental Health Nurse – Registered Mental health nurses work as part of a professional and medical staff team that includes doctors, social workers, therapists, and psychiatrists. They work in a range of settings, including hospitals and people's homes. They support people with issues ranging from anxiety and depression to personality and eating disorders.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Building relationships with, reassuring, and listening to, and talking to patients

  • Assessing and planning nursing care requirements

  • Reviewing care plans and monitoring progress

  • Arrange support for patients, relatives, and carers

  • Collaboration with doctors, social workers, and other professionals

  • Encourage  patients to take part in therapeutic activities such as art and role play

Community Health Nurse – The community nurse acts as a teacher and counselor primarily but also plays a vital role in preventing widespread illness and disease in the community she serves

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide direct care, educate individuals or the public, advocate for health improvements, and perform research in community health. She might also lead or collaborate with other health care professionals, organizations, political figures, and community members to promote health for her community.

  • Planning and delivering a community health program, taking into account the physical, social, spiritual, mental, and environmental factors that influence each individual, family, and community

  • Delivering an immunization program in accordance to Healthcare Immunization Policy and Procedure

  • Ensures to maintain an infectious disease reporting program

Homecare Nurse -  Homecare aims to make it possible for people to remain at home rather than use residential, long-term, or institutional-based nursing care. Home care providers render services in the patients' own homes. These services may include some combination of professional health care services and life assistance services. 
Home Care Nurses provide care to patients in their homes under the guidance of a physician

Duties & responsibilities

  • Monitoring of vital signs during home care; blood pressure, heart rate, temperature and oximeter statistics

  • Monitoring of blood glucose levels and providing teaching and support for client and family

  • Preparation and administration of medications

  • Medication monitoring and support for clients with acute or chronic health conditions

  • Wound assessment and dressing changes

  • Monitor and care of catheters and ostomy

School Nurse - School nurses work to promote a healthy school environment. Beyond promoting health and safety for students within the school facility during the school day, they also encourage students to maintain healthy habits and behaviors when they are not in school. These nursing professionals are also responsible for identifying both actual and potential health problems, providing case management services, and collaborating with educators, school officials, students, and families to ensure students respond positively to their environment and develop normally.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide healthcare to students and staff

  • Perform health screenings

  • Coordinate referrals to private healthcare providers

  • Serve as liaisons between school personnel, family, and community healthcare providers to ensure a healthy school environment

  • Developing plans for student care based on assessment, interventions, and identification of outcomes, and the evaluation of care

Dental Nurse – Dental nurses are healthcare workers whose primary role is to help dentists carry out different kinds of oral-care procedures.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • They are preparing instruments to be used during treatment procedures, recording medical information, and ensuring that patients are comfortable.

  • They also help while working in general practice to carry out administrative duties such as answering phones, booking appointments, taking payments, meeting with patients, reassuring them, and handling paperwork.

Aesthetic Nurse – Known as a cosmetic nurse. Focuses primarily on cosmetic and dermatologic procedures

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Cosmetic Nurses assist physicians with various surgical procedures, including breast augmentation, liposuction, rhinoplasty, and abdominoplasty.

  • Responsible for performing or assisting with less invasive cosmetic procedures such as Botox, dermal fillers, laser hair removal, collagen replacement therapy, and chemical peels.

  • Assessing skin aging or other skin-related health problems

  • Administering Botox injections, chemical peels, dermal fillers, and other non-invasive cosmetic procedures

  • Performing pre and postoperative care

  • Researching to stay up-to-date on new techniques and protocols

  • Consulting with, screening, and scheduling patients

  • Assisting the Physician or Surgeon during various cosmetic surgeries and procedures

  • Preparing and sterilizing instruments and operating rooms

Theatre Nurse - are nurses whose primary focus is on operations and surgeries. Theatre nurses play multiple roles before, during, and even after the procedure.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assess patients before surgery (e.g., NPO status) and alleviate their concerns

  • Gather all supplies needed for the operation

  • Assume responsibility of keeping the operating room sterilized

  • Position and prepare patient on the operating table

  • Pass medical instruments or other objects to the surgeon during the operation

  • Monitor patient's vital signs to detect anomalies

  • Evaluate patient in postoperative phases

  • Adhere to safety standards and precautions

  • Assume duties within or out of the sterile field as assigned

Dialysis Nurse - Dialysis nurses or renal dialysis nurses work in the nephrology department of the hospital. They provide personal care and help to the patients who undergo hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis. The treatment of dialysis is given to patients whose kidneys are not functioning correctly and require immediate treatment. Dialysis is carried out in most severe cases of kidney functioning disorders.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • They discuss general signs and symptoms associated with dialysis to make patients aware of them beforehand

  • They monitor the patients' progress post-treatment visiting their home and conducting specific tests

  • They document these reports and hand them to the concerned doctors

  • They assist the patients in taking the prescribed medications and make sure that the patients are following all the instructions given by the doctors

  • They guide the patients in disease management whenever necessary and schedules a periodic meeting with the doctors for postoperative checkups

  • Dialysis nurses arrange settings required in the operation theatre for the kidney dialysis of the patients

Section C: How to be a Registered Nurse in The UAE

Professional Qualification Requirement (PQR)

  • The Unified Healthcare Professional Qualification Requirements (PQR) is a standardized Licensing document developed by UAE Health Authorities

  • According to the geographical jurisdiction, UAE Health Authorities – The Regulatory Authorities within the United Arab Emirates, Ministry of Health and Prevention  (MOHAP), Department of Health -Abu Dhabi, and Dubai Health Authority (DHA).

  • PQR represents a milestone towards fulfilling the UAE strategic objectives to improve healthcare service provision across the country.

  • Provides a base for the Authorities to assess the documents submitted by applicants within their geographical jurisdiction to ensure safe and competent delivery of services.

  • It emphasizes educational standards, experience, and licensure requirements for healthcare professionals to be licensed to practice safely in the UAE, follow the UAE federal laws, and benchmark international best practices.

Requirements and Considerations: Nurses Licensure Requirements

  • Nurses applying for licensure must fulfill the following requirements:

  • Must be graduates from National and International recognized Nursing college/University.

  • Qualifications acquired through honorary nature, correspondence, or distance learning are not counted towards the PQR requirements.

  • Required Bachelor degree must be a minimum of three (3) years full-time course duration.

  • The duration and content of study, and the presence of clinical practice/ practical training.

  • Applicants must hold a valid License/ Registration to practice in their home country and country of last employment (Where applicable).

  • Assistant Nurses and Assistant Midwives cannot work independently and shall work under a registered nurse or midwife.

  • All Nurses must hold a minimum of current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification or others according to the scope of practice.

  • The academic transcript must be submitted for credentialing purposes in which determination of disciplines shall be applied.

Most of the time,  Registered Nurses (RN) work for hospitals or medical clinics. They may also work for other organizations, such as outpatient facilities, rehabilitation centers, home care, etc. Their main job is to promote wellness and health.

An entry-level Registered Nurse (RN) with less than 1-year experience an expect to earn an average total compensation of AED 48,000 (based on six salaries)

  • 48,000 dirhams /12 months = 4,000 AED

An early career Registered nurse with 1-4 years of experience earns an average total compensation of AED 58,000 (based on 142 salaries)

  • 58,000 dirhams / 12 months = 4,800 AED

A mid-career Registered Nurse with 5-9 years of experience earns an average total compensation of AED 64,683 (based on 152 salaries)

  • 64,683 dirhams /12 months = 5,390.25 AED

Section E: Working Conditions

Working hours

Working hours vary per institution. Government employees (nurses) work 40 to 48 hours per week, and exceeding hours will be counted as overtime. While in private institutions, maximum working hours may reach 60 hours/ week, and exceeding hours will be counted as paid overtime.

Section F: Process of Licensing Procedure

The primary stage in registration for the DOH, DHA, MOHAP  exam is to determine whether your professional qualification is up to the standard required by the Health Authority. This process is known as Professional Qualification Requirement (PQR) Assessment.

What is DataFlow?

Dataflow is the system contracted by HAAD to provide the e-licensing system, and they will send you a username & password via the email registered in the initial application.

The DataFlow process or the Primary Source Verification (PSV)  application phase is a highly reliable background screening procedure used to verify the candidate's personal or professional credentials directly from its original issuing source. The DataFlow requirements vary depending on the candidate's profession and the licensing Authorities (DOH, DHA, & MOHAP). Therefore, please make sure to the information you will be provided in your application is correct. Any discrepancy may raise a red flag.

Two  DataFlow status results may show on a candidates' Dataflow report: either a POSITIVE result or a NEGATIVE result. Each candidate who sent his/her documents for the verification process will be given a dedicated HAAD DataFlow login details as their reference.

  • The DOH, DHA, MOHAP -RN Exam comprises 150 multiple choice questions that must be completed within 3 hours. The questions are prepared to upgrade a nurse's fundamental knowledge about the nursing profession.
