A registered nurse has an easier time obtaining a green card to enter the United States than practically any other occupation. Petitioning for a foreign-born registered nurse (RN) to work in the United States entails supporting her for permanent residence. Permanent Residency in the United States for Professional Nurses
If the RN is based in the United States, she can begin working for the company sooner than if she is based abroad. Usually, a nurse can work within 5 to 6 months. The nurse, however, must take and pass the NCLEX-RN exam in any state. The National Council of State Boards of Nursing administers the NCLEX-RN.
US permanent residence for Foreign Nurses
If the Registered nurse lives outside of the United States, the following processes must be accomplished before the nurse can work in the United States:
- a nursing diploma from a school in her nation;
- In her home nation, she holds an RN license
- CGFNS certificate
- Passing the NCLEX-RN licensing examination
Visa Screen For Nurses
Before being awarded a permanent or temporary occupational visa, a nurse must complete the VisaScreen Visa Credentials Assessment Service. This is a screening procedure. You will receive a VisaScreen certificate once all aspects of the evaluation have been properly completed.
Other important requirements are:
- An educational evaluation
- Licensure review
- English language proficiency assessment
- Passing of NCLEX-RN exam.
VisaScreen applicants who complete the application will receive an ICHP VisaScreen certificate. This is to be presented as part of a visa application to a consular official. The Attorney General is in charge of visa status adjustments.
Immigrant Visa Petition
The immigration procedure begins when an employer files an immigrant visa petition (Form I-140). The requirements are submitted to the US Citizenship and Immigration Services service center.
Other Requirements Needed are:
- A Labor Department Form ETA-9089
- A posting notice
- A prevailing wage determination
- A check for filing fees should also be included with the petition.
USCIS And NVC
The accepted visa petition is sent to the National Visa Center (NVC) in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, by US Citizenship and Immigration Services. A "fee bill" is sent to the nurse, demanding that all government processing fees be paid in advance. After the fees are paid, the NVC sends a packet to the nurse or her attorney that includes biographical information forms for her and her family members to fill out, as well as a list of papers that must be presented.
The immigration procedure can appear to be a maze at times. However, with the right training and some hands-on experience, it should not deter a potential employer from interviewing candidates.
