The population of New Zealand is aging. Approximately 23% of the total population will be 65 years of age or older by 2036. Moreover, the number of senior citizens with disabilities is projected to increase by 60% by 2051. Taking care of and communicating with older people may be different in New Zealand than in your home country. There will also be changes in how people interact at work. You can learn more about working in aged care in New Zealand and where to find assistance if you need it by reading this guide.

Becoming a Caregiver in New Zealand

For the right kind of person, caring for others can be a very rewarding career. You probably already know that there are many opportunities for caregiving jobs in most communities in New Zealand and that elderly caregivers are in high demand. Nursing homes, hospitals, adult day care facilities, and clients' homes have available caregiving positions.

Be Receptive to Diversity and Other Cultures

You'll need to learn how to treat people from different cultural backgrounds as best you can for your job, which will require you to do so. Certain workplace traditions may have a special connection to Pacific or Mori cultures. Your employer may provide instruction on how to deal with and look after people from different cultural backgrounds.

The vast majority of senior citizens in New Zealand value the help and attention that their caregivers provide. However, some people have trouble understanding accents from different countries or apparent cultural differences. This might be a result of a medical condition like dementia or hearing loss.

How to Become a Caregiver in NZ (For Foreign Caregivers)

Verify that the industry recognizes your degree if you plan to apply for an aged care job in New Zealand using your overseas education. Your qualification must be comparable to the standard of the New Zealand qualification on the skill shortage list if you are applying for a position that is listed on Immigration New Zealand's Long Term Skill Shortage List, such as Registered Nurse (Aged Care).

To determine whether your foreign credential aligns with the New Zealand Qualifications Framework, you must have it evaluated by Qualifications Recognition Services (QRS) at the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA).

Visa Application and Other Requirements

According to New Zealand law, in order to practice as nurses, physiotherapists, or occupational therapists there, a person must first register with a local professional organization or council. You need a valid practicing certificate before you can apply for a work or residence visa.

If you're attempting to register as a nurse, physiotherapist, or occupational therapist, you must show proof that you hold a credential that is recognized internationally and is equivalent to the one required in New Zealand. Additionally, you must be competent to practice within your area of expertise. You must also fulfill registration requirements, which include having the necessary English communication skills for your role. Foreign applicants must take an English language test prior to submitting an application.

Employment contracts
You must receive a written employment contract from your employer that details your schedule, compensation, paid time off, and any other terms you and your employer have agreed upon.

Any modifications to your original employment contract that you and your employer later agree to, such as adjustments to the number of hours worked, must be made in writing and added to your employment contract.

In New Zealand, the aged care industry is in need of diligent and sympathetic individuals to fill positions such as caregivers, healthcare assistants, support workers, nurse aides, or activity coordinators. The achievement of nationally recognized qualifications can help a person create a rewarding career path in the aged care industry.
