Group of healthcare professionals discussing

In New Zealand, qualified nurses have numerous options. To work in this beautiful country, overseas nurses must be qualified to meet New Zealand standards and be registered with the Nursing Council of New Zealand (NCNZ). New Zealand provides unique opportunities for registered nurses to practice in a wide range of nursing practice areas and settings.

What nursing jobs are available in New Zealand?

Nurses can work in a variety of settings, including aged care, primary care, mental health and addiction, intensive care, and child and adolescent nursing. You can also pursue careers in nursing practice, health management, research, and education. A career in this field of medicine also allows you to work all over New Zealand.

Working as an Enrolled Nurse

As an EN, you will provide physical and emotional care, monitor patient care, administer medication, maintain infection prevention and control, perform clinical assessments, and contribute to care planning. However, you’ll need to work under the supervision of a registered nurse.

ENs can work in a variety of clinical settings, including medical, surgical, mental health, pediatrics, orthopedics, rehabilitation, oncology, operating rooms, rural and remote, emergency, ambulatory care, and community health care.

Graduate enrolled nurses can apply to various health services for a transition program. Transition programs for graduate nurses include structured support and facilitated skill development.  ENs have access to a variety of education and development opportunities through their workplace.

Working as a Registered Nurse

Registered nurses in New Zealand have the opportunity to practice in a wide range of nursing practice areas in a variety of settings. You can also work as a nurse manager, an educator, a researcher, or a nurse practitioner.

In order to become a registered nurse in New Zealand, you must first complete a Bachelor's degree. Following that, you must take an exam to check your competency. Practicum is required as part of the nursing program. A student nurse must work in a healthcare facility under the supervision of a registered nurse.

If you have current registration in a country other than Australia and meet the Nursing Council registration standards, you may apply to practice in New Zealand. Internationally qualified nurses who meet Nursing Council standards may apply to be registered to practice in New Zealand.

Working as a Nurse Practitioner

Nurse practitioners are autonomous, highly skilled health practitioners with advanced education, clinical training, and demonstrated competency. They are legally permitted to practice above the level of a registered nurse.

Advanced nursing knowledge and skills are combined with nurse practitioners' diagnostic reasoning and therapeutic knowledge. They care for people with both common and complex medical conditions.

Many nurse practitioners work in primary care, where they, like general practitioners, may serve as the primary healthcare provider for patients and their families. Some nurse practitioners run their own businesses. Others work for district health boards and non-profit organizations.

The number of Registered Nurses has increased dramatically in the last five years. And the New Zealand government expects it to rise even further. In 2013, there were 52,729 nurses, and by 2023, there could be up to 56,650! The chances of getting a job as a registered nurse are average for those just starting out, but excellent for those with experience.
